Details and limits

Audiobookshelf is a local MCP server for a self-hosted Audiobookshelf audiobook and podcast server. The package name is audiobookshelf-mcp. You run it over stdio or stateless Streamable HTTP on localhost. It does not start Audiobookshelf for you. This is free; the catalogue price is Free.

Works with Audiobookshelf. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Audiobookshelf project.

There is no hosted service in this listing. Bring your own API token from Settings, API Keys. Set ABS_BASE_URL to your server and ABS_API_TOKEN to the token, sent as Authorization: Bearer and never printed.

Writes are confirm-gated. A write is a dry-run preview when confirm is omitted. confirm must be the boolean true, and ABS_ALLOW_WRITES must be the literal true. Deletes, scans, backup restore, user and API key changes carry an extra warning.

The default ABS_TOOLSETS publishes 13 tools (123 operations). Set it to all for 26 tools (181 operations). Each tool takes an action field. Media streams, archive downloads, file uploads and playback session start are left out.

The local limit defaults to 30 requests a minute. A cache hit does not spend that window.

Checked live against a real Audiobookshelf 2.37.2 server: 25 checks passed. Other operations are covered by mock-server tests only.

Audiobookshelf is GPL-3.0. The connector is MIT and only calls the public HTTP API.
